Belgravia Senior Centre situated in Denchworth Road, Athlone, Cape Town was established by the CPOA in August 1981. The centre aims to provide an environment where older persons are able to interact with their peers, enjoy a nutritious meal at a reasonable price and partake in a variety of activities including carpet bowls, darts, handcrafts, sewing, games and many more. Remaining an independent and active member of a community is at the heart of senior centres.
Belgravia forms an integral part of the community by not only caring for their own aged but also reaching out to other seniors in need. Seven years ago, Belgravia initiated a relationship with an old age home “Silwer Jare Ouetehuis” in Grabouw. Members of Belgravia visit this home annually during April or May. Much preparation is put into this visit as members of Belgravia start planning at the beginning of the year by collecting food and good used clothing. They prepare a special meal for the residents and staff totalling 120 people.
A great deal of time is spent talking to the residents of “Silwer Jare Old Age Home”. Many have been there a good number of years and are happy to have the company of others, since they are so seldom visited by love ones. For the most part, they are very content and the general atmosphere is a happy one with the manager and staff being a major contributing factor to all this.
Belgravia sets a wonderful example in caring for others despite our own needs, in reaching out to those less fortunate and moving beyond our own boundaries of comfort. We commend them for adopting “Silwer Jare” and adding value to the lives of the older persons at the home. The residents of “Silwer Jare” have had their annual dose of love and care by the special members of Belgravia Senior Centre and eagerly await their return next year.
