Dear Friends

Christmas is not too far away and, thinking about it, I wondered what this Christmas will bring – not in the sense of gifts and parties but more in the type of events – both national and international.  However that is a bit depressing and I would rather concentrate on such things as gifts and parties!

Most of us are thinking about going to, or giving, a party.  I do not think it matters what your age, a party is fun! Giving one can be a lot of work but, in my experience, is generally rewarding.  And, of course, giving and getting presents is even more fun! It also needs a good deal of forethought.  So often you decide to give a relative (or friend) a present and then the question arises of – what? Hunting for something suitable can be time-consuming but, ultimately, satisfying.

However, the core of Christmas is just that – Christ mass! It is remembering what happened 2000 odd years ago and bearing witness to the result.  Children are at the centre of Christmas and whatever we can do for children at this time can be infinitely rewarding, whether they be your own or somebody else’s.  I am aware that not everyone follows the Christian creed but, I am sure, whatever your belief, you will agree that at this time of the year, children are in the forefront of our thoughts. (If they are not I should think the window-dressing in the shops and the newspapers will bring it forcefully to your attention!).

This is the month, and this is the morn,
Wherein the Son of Heaven’s eternal King,
Of wedded Maid and Virgin mother born,
Our great redemption from above did bring;
For so the holy sages once did sing;
That he our deadly forfeit should release,
And with his Father work us a perpetual peace.

(“Ode on the morning of Christ’s Nativity” – John Milton)

Happy Christmas to all
